Price Guide
Catering prices in Cape Town: what you'll pay per person.
An honest 2026 guide to catering costs — the tiers, what moves the price, and what to check before you book anyone.
The four price tiers
Catering in Cape Town isn't one price — it's a ladder, and where you land depends mostly on service style. Here's the honest 2026 range for each:
Drop-off & canapés
≈ R120 – R250 ppPlatters, grazing boxes and canapés delivered ready to serve. No staff on site. Perfect for office lunches, casual gatherings and smaller budgets.
Buffet & spit-braai
≈ R280 – R400 ppGenerous shared spreads and live-fire feasts with setup and serving. Our Urban Spit-Braai sits here, from R320 pp.

Two quotes for "R350 per person" can be completely different events. The variables that matter: service style (drop-off vs plated-and-served), menu and ingredients (line fish and fillet cost more than chicken and pasta), guest count (per-head prices ease as numbers grow, but minimums apply), staffing(chefs and waiters on site), and rentals— crockery, glassware, linen and furniture if your venue doesn't provide them. The last one is where surprise costs hide.
Questions to ask before you book
- Is this per-head price all-in, or are staff and rentals extra?
- What's the minimum guest count or minimum spend?
- How many staff will be on site, and for how long?
- Are halaal, vegetarian and allergy options included or extra?
- What does the deposit cover, and when is the balance due?
Frequently asked
How much does catering cost per person in Cape Town?
As a rough 2026 guide: drop-off platters and canapés run around R120–R250 per person; buffets and spit-braais roughly R280–R400; plated three-course menus about R450–R650; and premium chef's-table or wedding menus R650+ per person. The number moves with your menu, guest count, service style and staffing — every quote we give is built on your specific event.
What makes catering cost more or less?
Five things: service style (drop-off is cheapest, plated with waiters is dearest), menu complexity and ingredients (line fish and fillet cost more than chicken and pasta), guest count (per-head prices ease as numbers rise, but there are minimums), staffing (chefs and waiters on site), and rentals (crockery, glassware, linen, furniture) if your venue doesn't supply them.
Is there a minimum spend or guest count for catering?
Most Cape Town caterers set a minimum — often around 20–30 guests, or a minimum rand value for smaller intimate events — because the setup, travel and staffing cost the same whether it's 12 guests or 20. For very small dinners a private-chef format is usually better value than event catering.
Should I expect to pay for rentals and staff on top of the per-person price?
Sometimes. Always check whether a quoted per-head price includes serving staff, crockery, cutlery, glassware and linen, or whether those are extra. A cheaper-looking per-person number with everything excluded can end up dearer than an all-in quote. We spell out exactly what's included so there are no surprises.
How far in advance should I book and pay a deposit?
For weekends and peak season (October–April, December especially), four to eight weeks ahead is sensible; weddings often book months out. A booking is usually confirmed with a deposit, with the balance and final guest numbers settled closer to the date.
