What Cape Winelands wedding catering actually costs.

The per-head price is the part everyone asks about, and it is the part that changes least. What actually moves a winelands quote is the drive, the length of the day, and a farm kitchen that was never built to send 120 plates at once.

Start with the same per-person bands as the city

A vineyard does not change how food is cooked, so it does not change the cost of cooking it. Our 2026 Cape Town price guide is the right starting point for a winelands wedding too: roughly R120 to R250 per person for drop-off platters and canapés, R280 to R400 for a buffet or a spit-braai, and R450 to R650 for a plated three-course menu.

For a wedding specifically, our own full-day menu starts from R520 per person. That is the whole day rather than a single course: canapés after the ceremony, shared starters, plated mains, and a dessert table with late-night bites.

If you want the total rather than the per-head figure, we have already done that arithmetic for 20, 50 and 100 guests in the cost-by-guest-count guide. This page is about the layer that sits on top of it once your venue is an hour out of town.

What a farm venue adds, and why

Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl sit roughly 45 to 75 minutes from Cape Town depending on where you start and what the N1 is doing. That distance is not a surcharge for the postcode. It is three real things:

  • Travel for people and equipment. A full brigade and a vehicle of kit make the round trip, and the team is on the clock for the drive as well as the dinner.
  • A longer service day. Winelands weddings tend to start earlier and finish later. A summer ceremony at five, a sunset that holds past eight, and late-night food after the dancing is a very different shift from a city dinner that wraps at eleven.
  • A kitchen that is not really a kitchen. Plenty of beautiful farm venues have a prep room with a sink and a domestic oven. Refrigeration, hot-holding and sometimes the cooking equipment itself has to travel in. That is the single most underestimated line on a winelands quote.

The two questions to ask your venue before anything else

First: can you bring an outside caterer at all? Some estates run their own kitchen and require you to use it, some keep a preferred list and charge a fee to go outside it, and some are completely open. This is often not on the website. Ask directly, and get it in writing.

Second: what does the venue charge separately? A kitchen fee, corkage, a minimum spend or a compulsory service charge can quietly add more to your budget than the difference between a buffet and a plated menu. Find those numbers before you sign, not after.

What sits outside every per-head quote

Ours and everyone else’s. Rentals, meaning crockery, cutlery, glassware, linen and furniture. Travel to an out-of-town venue. Staffing beyond the standard service window. And whatever the venue bills you directly. The per-person figure covers food and service, and it is the base of your budget rather than the whole of it.

We would rather tell you that now than surprise you with it in a quote. If a caterer gives you a single per-head number for a farm wedding with no mention of travel or rentals, ask them what is excluded before you compare it to anyone else’s.

A note on wind, because nobody warns you

A summer south-easter will take a canapé off a tray and a tablecloth off a table. Winelands venues are often more sheltered than the Atlantic Seaboard, but an exposed lawn between the mountains still funnels it. If your reception is outdoors between November and February, ask the venue where the wind actually comes from and have a plan for plated courses that is not simply hoping. We build service around it rather than pretending it is not there.

Common questions

How much does wedding catering cost in the Cape Winelands?

Use the same per-person bands as the rest of Cape Town as your base: roughly R120 to R250 per person for drop-off platters and canapés, R280 to R400 for a buffet or spit-braai, and R450 to R650 for a plated three-course menu. A winelands venue does not change the cooking, so it does not change those bands. What it changes is everything around the food: travel to the farm, a longer service day, and equipment that has to be carried in because the venue kitchen was built to plate for a restaurant, not for 120 wedding guests. Our own full wedding menu starts from R520 per person, which covers canapés after the ceremony, shared starters, plated mains and a dessert table with late-night bites. Budget travel, rentals and extra staffing as separate lines rather than expecting them inside the per-head number.

Why do winelands venues cost more to cater than a Cape Town garden?

Distance and self-sufficiency. Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are all roughly 45 to 75 minutes from the city, which turns a service day into a travel day for the whole team and the equipment. Many farm venues also have a prep kitchen rather than a production kitchen, so refrigeration, hot-holding and sometimes the cooking equipment itself travels with us. None of that is a surcharge for being in the winelands. It is the real cost of putting a full kitchen somewhere that does not have one.

Do winelands wedding venues let you bring your own caterer?

It varies genuinely, and it is the first thing to establish before you fall in love with a venue. Some estates run their own kitchen and require you to use it. Some keep a preferred supplier list and will allow an outside caterer for a fee. Some are fully open. The policy is often not on the website, so ask directly and get the answer in writing, along with whether a kitchen fee, corkage or a minimum spend applies.

What is not included in a per-person catering price?

As a rule: rentals such as crockery, cutlery, glassware, linen and furniture, travel to an out-of-town venue, staffing beyond the standard service window, and anything the venue charges separately like a kitchen or corkage fee. The per-head figure covers food and service. Treat it as the base of your budget rather than the whole of it, which is the same advice we give for any Cape Town event.

How far in advance should we book a winelands wedding caterer?

For a peak-season Saturday, meaning roughly October through April and December in particular, four to eight weeks is the minimum and weddings commonly book months out. Winelands venues are booked further ahead than city ones, and the caterer usually follows the venue, so the moment the venue is confirmed is the moment to confirm the catering.

We cater weddings across the winelands and greater Cape Town. If you have a venue in mind, send us the date, the guest count and the venue name through the booking form and we will tell you honestly what the day will cost, including the parts that are not food.
